My new favorite place to shop:
I probably shouldn't admit this on a public forum, but one of my favorite places to check out when we travel is the local grocery store or market. I think you can learn so much about the local culture just by checking out what's on the shelves, and I also have fun comparing prices. What I learned about local Hawaiian culture by checking out the Big Save is that it's not that different from Texas culture, except they have to pay a LOT more for nearly everything, and they have a much more limited selection (both of which are perhaps not all that surprising given they have to have nearly everything shipped in from far away).
Today we headed for Waimea Canyon in western Kauai and Koke'e State Park in northwestern Kauai.
Spectacular views of the Na Pali coast from Koke'e State Park:
In this photo, I'm thinking, "Hurry up and take the darned photo so I can run back to the car!" It was unfortunately very windy and cold while we were there, and I'd naively worn shorts and open-toed shoes. Thank goodness I tote a sweater around with me everywhere, or my only view today would have been what I could see out the car window!
Waimea Canyon:
We had dinner tonight at the Beach House, which has a fantastic location right on the water. The food was good and the drinks were excellent. Unfortunately, our waitress was truly bizarre (so much so, that we were both convinced she had to be under the influence of something), and that sort of ruined the experience for us. Service that shoddy can be overlooked or even viewed as amusing in the right circumstances, but not when you're paying that much for a nice, romantic dinner out. I would actually eat there again (in fact, I tried to make reservations but they were booked for the remainder of our stay in Kauai), but would request that someone else wait on us.
No photo of us at the restaurant because their much-touted in-house photographer never showed up to our table, and by the time we'd finished dinner, we didn't want to ask our waitress to take our photo because we couldn't get away from her fast enough. So you'll just have to take my word for it that we both looked great!
